PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The building site for this project is up on a bluff above the Sakonnet River in Tiverton, RI. The town has for the most part escaped over-building, retaining an agrarian landscape with coastal farms and open fields along the shoreline. Across the mouth of the river is Aquidneck Island (Newport) and the open ocean. The local vernacular is mostly one and two story single family shingle cottages and larger summer homes. In this case, the owner wanted something a little different.

A high priority was placed on materials that required little seasonal maintenance, durability and performance that would excel in the coastal environment. Variegated slate shingles and copper roofing details, brick and ashlar cut stone masonry and closed cell polyurethane architectural detailing are predominant on the building enclosure. LowE and reflective glazing reduce solar effects on cooling and UV. The interiors make use of a similar vocabulary of columns, entablature and articulated moldings with imported stone slabs, exotic woods and ornate fresco plaster painting. Formal spaces for dining and entertaining are completed with inlayed stone flooring, carved marble fireplace and coffered ceilings.

The floor plan is a simple ell with most rooms given priority to river views. Westerly facing terraces make most of the afternoon light. The garage built for boat storage and two vehicles, along with gate entry and thick landscaping at the east provide privacy. A rotunda forms the main entrance and contains an open circular stair to the second floor at the corner of the ell. The master bedroom suite has a west facing terrance, walk-in closets, smoking room and separate baths.
